Palate App.

The other interactive side of this project is an app that works alongside the mealtime products. This is done through hidden symbols at the bottom of the plate/bowls which you have to find/unlock once you have finished eating (the app detects this). The symbol relates to an interesting fact about the food item and animates a cartoon for the user on the iPad.

This app also tracks and indicates the long term impacts, especially for the recovery of stroke patients. They will also be able to use the augmented reality feature on the app by picking up the iPad with both hands as they recover. This way they will be able to see the animation integrated into real life on their plate through the camera on the app.

Inspiration and Ideas.

This shows where my inspiration came from and the initial ideation sketch of how I planned the app.

Mockups and Design Development.

iPads are now integrated into hospital beds and will be used for a variety of things to assist with patients needs. It is used to order food and that is why I wanted to make it a valuable part of the hospital mealtime experience.

In the image above, it shows a mock-up and the framework of the app including all the screens in the app.

Interactive App Display Features.

This app is simple and has bright colours to complement the physical product. I illustrated creative characters that related to what the patient ate that day. For example, if you get ice cream in your meal there will be an animation of an astronaut on an ice cream moon, eating ice cream which comes along with an interesting fact.

In the app, you can go back and rewatch animations that you have unlocked so far during your meals/ keep track of the patient’s journey in the hospital. Using the special characters, you can also help the patient with their rehabilitation due to memory loss after having a stroke (memory game as shown on right).

Video of App Interaction.

This is the final app design prototype to show how the patient might use and go through the app when using it with the Palate Products.
